L-profile steel, also known as unequal-edge unequal-thickness angle steel, is a new type of profiles produced to meet the needs of large-scale ship construction. The profile coefficient and stiffness of L-profile steel are bigger than that of spherical flat steel under the same height and abdomen plan. Under the same section coefficient, the ship’s storage capacity is increased and the economic benefit is improved. In addition, the thickness of L-profile steel plate is slightly thinner than that of spherical flat steel when the section coefficient is the same, which is beneficial to improving the quality of weld.

Use of L-profile steel:

L-profile steel is a new type of profiles produced to meet the needs of large-scale ship construction. L-profile steel can be used not only for large ships, but also for offshore engineering structures and construction structures with high requirements. The surface quality of L-profile steel is stipulated in the standard. Generally speaking, there are no harmful defects in use, such as stratification, scarring, cracking, etc.

L-profile steel can be used to form various stress components according to the different needs of the structure, and it can also be used as a connection between the components. It is widely used in various building structures and engineering structures, such as beams, bridges, transmission towers, lifting and transportation machinery, ships, industrial furnaces, reaction towers, container racks and warehouse shelves.

Main advantages of L profile steel:

1. The section coefficient and stiffness of L-profile steel are larger than that of spherical flat steel when the height of section steel is the same as that of abdominal flat steel.

2. At the same cross-section coefficient, the thickness of L-profile steel plate is slightly thinner than that of spherical flat steel, which is beneficial to improving the quality of weld.

3. Under the condition of the same cross-section coefficient, increase the ship’s warehouse capacity and increase the economic benefit.

Formulas and Examples for Calculating the Theoretical Weight of L-profile Steel:

Formulas:W =0.00785×[BD+d(b–D)+0.215(r2–r12)]

In the formula, W represents the theoretical weight in kg/m; B is the long side width, B is the short side width, D is the long side thickness, D is the short side thickness, R is the inner arc radius, R1 is the end arc radius, and the unit is mm.

For example, the theoretical weight of 300 mm x 100 mm x 10.5 mm x 15 mm L-section steel. Firstly, it is found from the theoretical weight table of L-profile steel that the R of the L-profile steel is 15 and the R 1 is 7.5.W = 0.00785×[300×10.5+15×(100–10.5)+0.215×(152–7.52)]=35.6(kg/m)

The difference between L-section steel and angle steel: angle steel can be said to be equal angle steel or unequal angle steel. L-shape is usually expressed as unequal angle steel, which is a type of angle steel.
